Homosexuality and the Bible

reading bibleAll too often, Christians who are homosexual in their orientation falter in their Christian growth because of misinterpretations and misunderstandings of Holy Scripture. While mainline evangelical (as well as non-evangelical) organizations debate the issue of Christian and Gay, many of our brothers and sisters who are gay or lesbian, bisexual or transgendered, turn to the traps of the secular world. Feeling that the Christ Who died for them and who came to bring reconciliation to all of His creation rejects them, they leave the safe harbor of His church. At the core of the debate is the issue of nature versus nurture. Whether the homosexual person is born with a homosexual orientation or not, the experience of the vast majority of gay and lesbian brothers and sisters is that they were born as they experience life. Church of the Holy SpiritSong seeks to lead people to Christ and nurture them in Christian discipleship in a way that integrates God's divine creation of them so that God's great commission is fulfilled.

Jesus said nothing about homosexuality, bisexuality, or about transgendered persons. Jesus said much about God's love for us and about our need to respond to that love. The Bible is truly an empty closet. In fact, the word HOMOSEXUAL was not even created until 1869 in Germany.

Common Passages Used Against Homosexuals

Genesis, Chapter 19: Sodom and Gomorrah is a story about rape and assault, the antithesis of hospitality. These do not characterize homosexual orientation.

Leviticus, 18:22, and 20:13: Refers to acts that are ritually unclean. These also include eating pork and mixing threads (linen and cotton).

Deuteronomy 23:17-18: Refers to temple prostitution and idol worship. (There is no Hebrew word for sodomy.. it is an English creation)

Romans 1:26-27: These passages are in the context of Paul's admonition to not turn away from God.
The subject of the writing is idolatry, not homosexuality.

1 Corinthians 6:9: Written to restore unity in the church at Corinth. These words were not ascribed to homosexuals until the 20th century.

1 Timothy 1:10: 1 Timothy was written to combat heresy in the church, not to combat homosexuality!

Church of the Holy SpiritSong offers a course on homosexuality and the Bible. The course is given periodically throughout the year at no charge to the participant. The content has been heavily researched and documented using a significant number of reference instruments from the most reputable sources. For more information about this course or to gain more information about homosexuality and the Bible, email PastorTom@cohss.com or call (954) 418-8372.
